How to fish it

Rigged on a jighead matched to depth, current, and target species. The jighead weight, not the lure size, is what fishes the depth — change weight first, profile second. Standard retrieves: steady wind for active fish, lift-and-hop for neutral, dead-stick on the bottom for pressured or wary fish.

Ideal in clear water, on pressured fish, around structure, and any time subtle presentation outperforms aggressive lures. Targets vary widely with size: Bream, Bass, Flathead. Smaller plastics (2–4 inch) for bream/whiting/flathead; mid-range (5–7 inch) for mulloway/snapper; large (7–10 inch) for kingfish, jewfish offshore, and barramundi.

Hook the plastic dead-straight on the jighead — a kinked plastic spins and won't catch. Insert the hook through the centre, exit at the right point so the body sits flush against the jig collar, and pin the spike. Spray with a scent (ProCure, Bait Mate, S-Factor) on pressured fish; un-scented in clear blue water where fish are visual feeders.

Standard set: 6–14lb fluorocarbon leader (15–30lb for snapper/mulloway, 40–80lb for offshore kingfish), 1.5m to 3m of leader, FG knot to braid. Jighead weight is depth-dependent: 1/16oz to 1/4oz inshore shallows, 3/8oz to 3/4oz for 8–15m work, 1oz+ for current-driven jewfish work over 30m.

Reading BiteCast for this lure

When this lure is in your tackle box, BiteCast's data layers tell you the right conditions to fish it. The most relevant layers:

  • SST (sea-surface temperature)

Match SST to the target species' preferred range; sharp surface fronts often coincide with feeding zones, even inshore.

  • Subsurface temperature

Set depth slider to your fishing depth (50–80m for shelf reefs); confirm temp matches species preference at that depth.

  • Chlorophyll

The green/blue boundary is the food-chain front — fish concentrate on the edge, not the dense bloom interior.
