Cooktown / Lizard Island Fishing — A Complete Guide

Cooktown + Lizard Island fishing — heavy-tackle black marlin Sep–Nov, dogtooth tuna, GTs, sailfish, reef fish. Northern Ribbon Reefs access.

Cooktown is the gateway to the northern Ribbon Reefs — Reef No.3 and the iconic Lizard Island heavy-tackle marlin fishery. From Sep through Nov each year, the world's largest black marlin stage off these reefs for spawning, drawing the international heavy-tackle fleet. Outside marlin season: dogtooth tuna, GTs, sailfish, wahoo, mackerel, and reef fish on the outer GBR shelf.

The geography

  • Lizard Island: ~250 km north of Cairns, 30 km offshore. Floating game-fishing base for heavy-tackle marlin season.
  • Ribbon Reef No.3: Northernmost recognised heavy-tackle marlin reef.
  • Cooktown: Mainland gateway; ~100 km south of Lizard. Sheltered launch + supplies.
  • Outer shelf: Drops sharply east of the Ribbons; 1000+ m within 5 km of reef edge.

Frequently asked

How do I fish Lizard Island?

Almost exclusively via charter from Cairns or Cooktown, or via the Lizard Island resort. Heavy-tackle game boats stage at Lizard Sep–Nov for marlin. Private boats need serious offshore capability + crew + range.

What's the difference between Cairns and Cooktown for marlin?

Cairns is the larger, more established hub with charter selection + supplies. Cooktown is closer to the northern Ribbons (No.3 area where the bigger fish concentrate). Most serious heavy-tackle programmes operate from both depending on fish location week-to-week.

Can I fish here outside marlin season?

Yes — dogtooth tuna, GTs, sailfish, wahoo, mackerel, and reef fish all turn up year-round on the outer reefs. Dry season (May–Nov) is the working window.
