Port Phillip + Western Port Fishing — A Complete Guide

Port Phillip Bay + Western Port fishing — snapper, gummy shark, kingfish, squid, whiting, salmon. Seasonal guide, top spots, ramps. Built for Melbourne anglers.

Melbourne's two saltwater bays — Port Phillip and Western Port — are among AU's most fished waters. The famous Port Phillip pinkie/snapper run, world-class King George whiting, calamari squid, gummy + school sharks, and kingfish all turn up here. Western Port has stronger tides and more channel structure; Port Phillip is broader and reef-rich. Both are sheltered enough for trailerable boats year-round.

The geography

  • Port Phillip Bay: ~1900 km² semi-enclosed bay. Mostly 8–25 m deep with significant reef structure (Heads, Mt Martha, Frankston).
  • Western Port: Smaller, more channel-driven bay east of Port Phillip. Stronger tides; mangrove + seagrass systems.
  • The Heads: Port Phillip narrows at Queenscliff/Sorrento — sharp current, premier kingfish ground.
  • Bass Strait: Open ocean past the Heads. Cool water; tuna + sharks + kingfish in season.

Top species + when they bite

Conditions to watch

Cool-temperate conditions — water temps 13–22°C through the year. Westerly + southerly winds dominant; northerlies often the fishable days. Bass Strait past the Heads is serious open ocean — short fetch but big sea state in wind-against-tide. Both bays are sheltered enough for small boats year-round but tides run hard, especially in Western Port.

Frequently asked

When does the Port Phillip snapper run start?

Typically late October to early December for the iconic spring run. Water temperature is the trigger — once Port Phillip pushes past 16°C, big snapper move into the bay reefs to spawn. Mt Martha through Mornington is the recognised hot zone. Autumn run (March–May) also produces but with smaller average fish.

Where can I catch kingfish in Melbourne?

The Port Phillip Heads (Queenscliff/Sorrento narrows) is the premier ground. Live bait (yakka, calamari, mackerel) on heavy tackle around tide changes. Summer + autumn (Dec–May) is the window. Some fish caught off Mt Martha + Bay South reefs in good years.

Are the Heads dangerous?

The Heads transition between Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait can be very dangerous — the Rip is well-named. Strong tides + opposing wind create sharp standing seas. Plan crossings on slack water or wind-with-tide. Many small boats stick to the bay-side of the Heads for kingfish work.

What's the best time of year for King George whiting?

Year-round, with peak runs in summer + autumn. Multiple bays + reefs hold whiting; the Western Port channels and Port Phillip's central reefs are recognised grounds. Sand worms + pippies as bait, paternoster rigs.
